The Water Babies Customer Reviews
:- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Samanda b Jeude -- Got This Because … : It’s a classic. It’s also twee, prolix, and so stuffed with colonialism, sexism, racism, and enough England-Is-Best foolishness to be both stultifying *&* soporific. Do yourself a favor and ignore the claims of classic-ism; this should be dropped like the steaming pile of drivel that it is. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2020 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Margaret A. Gates -- Classic Book : This book was a little bit strange for me. I had trouble getting into the fantasy but there are people who absolutely love this book. It started out just fine but there was just so much talk about the water and fantasy that I could only handle it in small doses. If you love fantasy, you will love this book. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Buttered Sunshine -- filled with charm : My 7 year old son asks to read this book over and over again. He loves the thought of a little boy turning into a water baby and going on aqua adventures! The language is simple enough to understand, yet still very old fashioned and filled with loads of charm! The illustrations are simply gorgeous! ( Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2018 )

- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sentinel Tree -- Water Babies : This is surely the finest available special edition printing of Charles Kingsley's The Water Babies. Every detail is absolutely stunning - leather binding, archival paper, typeset, and illustrations. And of course the story itself is a classic treasure - the transformation of orphan chimney sweep Tom into a water baby, his adventures, life lessons, and growth as a water baby, and his eventual return to the world of humans... Of all the editions, this is the favored one among book collectors and connoisseurs, surpassing even the lovely Easton Press editions. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2012 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- ... you for making it possible to own such a beautiful copy of this book : Thank you for making it possible to own such a beautiful copy of this book. It's wonderful to still see honest prices. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2016 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Geoffrey Gudgion -- Of its time; wordy, patronising, racist : I read this as part of a book club. It was an interesting perspective of Victorian views & values in the time just after Darwin's Origin of Species. It is 'voiced' as an adult telling a story to a boy, 'my little man', but even so was squirmingly patronising. It has laudable views on the condition of the poor, and Kingsley's powers of description are superb, but he tends to ramble off into endless, moralising diversions that have no relevance to the story. It radiates the view that every English (not British) boy should be a plucky little chap, be he never so base-born, and if he displays the right sort of courage he might be a gentleman. His views on the Irish, the Welsh, and occasionally other races, made even this proud-to-be-English reader cringe. A book for a thick-skinned social historian, not for pleasure. - 2.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Condition poor : The cover and pages were intact but very dirty. I had to clean the cover thoroughly with a damp cloth before I could consider giving it to my friend as a thank you gift. The pages were spattered with yellow marks. The book doesn't smell very nice either. I have decided to give my own copy to my friend, and to keep this disappointing one for myself. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 23, 2018 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from M. Duncan -- Buy a different version : I waited with great excitement for the publication of this book but what a disappointment it is. The book has been printed on cheap 'blotting' paper and the middle four colour plates are creased. What a shame that the publisher's have spoilt such a wonderful book!
